Electrolytes are minerals in your body (like sodium, potassium, and calcium) with an electric charge and can be found in your blood, urine, tissues, and other bodily fluids. Having the right balance of electrolytes is important for a host of reasons, including:

Balancing the amount of water in your body
Moving waste through your body
Increasing nutrients in your cells
Balancing the body’s pH levels
Helping your nerves, muscles, and heart work optimally

How many electrolytes you need is all about water balance. If you have too little water (and are dehydrated) or too much water (yes, overhydration is a thing), or if you’re a committed exerciser (all that sweat may deplete your electrolyte stores), supplementing with electrolyte beverages may be an easy way for you to stay balanced.

The History of LMNT

LMNT was founded by Robb Wolf, a bestselling author and former research biochemist, along with his coaches Tyler Cartwright and Luis Villaseñor. As an athlete, Wolf relied on electrolytes to fuel his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training and low-carb lifestyle. The problem? Too much sugar—and not enough electrolytes—in most commercial options. The trio teamed up to develop a science-backed formula made with the perfect amount of salt, plus no sugar, artificial ingredients, coloring, or other questionable additions.

The goal at LMNT is to help you improve your health, longevity, and performance through hydration and electrolytes.

Benefits of LMNT

Although the FDA, CDC, and American Heart Association recommend that Americans consume less than 2,300 milligrams of sodium per day (ideally around 1,500 mg per day), LMNT doesn’t believe sodium is to blame for increased rates of obesity, heart disease, and what’s known as “Western degenerative diseases.” The culprit? A combination of refined carbs, sugar, and processed fats from our modern diets. The brand also cites a 2011 study that found risk factors for health issues actually increased in individuals consuming less than 2g of sodium per day. In keeping with its sugar-free values, nixing the refined stuff is only one of the many benefits of hydrating with LMNT.
