Many favorite Halloween candies have been around for a long time. According to the National Confectioners Association, candy corn was developed more than 100 years ago. While its long history is impressive, that doesn’t mean it couldn’t use an update. Many popular candies—candy corn included—contain ingredients like corn syrup (liquid sugar), dextrose (a type of sugar), and yellow 6 and red 3 (dyes). While candy is a treat by definition, we still believe brands can do better. The options we stock on Thrive Market will still satisfy your sweet tooth, but include ingredients like organic stevia, plant-based dyes, nut butters, whole grains, and more. Keep reading to learn about one of our member-favorite brands that’s all about using as many real ingredients as possible.

The History of UnReal

After yet another Halloween that Michael Bronner’s sons came home with bags of unhealthy candy (that he eventually confiscated) Bronner decided to try his hand at making homemade options. His sons joined in, and together with Australian chef Adam Melonas, the team developed its line of organic candies that still satisfy cravings without using chemicals or questionable ingredients.

UnReal Company Mission

UnReal is a candy company that removes corn syrup, hydrogenated fats, GMOs, artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives from its recipes and replaces them with better options like real milk, organic cane sugar, cacao, and nuts.

Benefits of UnReal

Not only does it taste good, but UnReal’s candy is made with real ingredients that are organic, fair trade, Certified Kosher, and Non-GMO Project Verified. Several of the options are also Certified Gluten-Free and vegan. To source its cocoa, UnReal guarantees a minimum price for the farmers, and also pays a premium to support community development initiatives such as leadership training, scholarships, and building schools. As for flavor, our Thrive Market members put it best. Angela from Calif., says the peanut butter cups taste “wholesome and rich,” and Kelli from Wyo., loves the crispy quinoa gems. “This is a great alternative to the mainstream chocolate candies on the market. They're quite addictive!”
